This is a student position of 37.5 hours per week, for a 2 year period and, from Winter 2018 to Autumn 2020.
Bursary – Master’s students will receive $ 17 500 per year, in 3 instalments.

Duties

The main goal of this master’s project is to characterize groundwater flows in a complex multilayer aquifer system by a hydrogeochemical and isotopic approach. Work will be on the Innisfil Creek subwatershed in the Simcoe area of southern Ontario. This hydrogeological study will allow a better understanding of the flow dynamics between the various hydrostratigraphic units. The specific objectives of this study are:
• Define a conceptual model of groundwater flow within and between different components of a complex multi-layered aquifer system;
• Characterize hydrostratigraphic between units using an approach combining hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers;
• Estimate potential mixtures of groundwater using various datasets from various sources including recharge, their relative age and flow path;
• To provide a portrait of the groundwater quality and describe the effect of their environment;
• Identify potential sources and migration of some natural (eg, methane) or anthropogenic contaminants (eg, nitrates);

• Ability to work in a research laboratory and in the field, additional sampling possible for hydrogeochemical and isotopic tracers.

Conditions of employment

The student must be willing to perform strenuous fieldwork sometimes in remote or isolated areas as part of research and follow all the required health and safety requirements
