Duties

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
The Community Health Nurse collaborates in the delivery of comprehensive health programs which include promoting, protecting and preserving the health of First Nations populations on reserve. Primary Health Care programs are designed in partnership with community members and leaders to promote environments that support good health. The Community Health Nurse adheres to the Canadian Community Health Nursing Standards of Practice; promoting health, building individual and community capacity, building relationships, facilitating access and equity, and demonstrating professional responsibility and accountability.

The maintenance of cultural competence and the provision of culturally safe care are paramount in this area of practice.

The roles and activities of Community Health Nurses in First Nations communities include:

Public Health - responsibilities such as communicable disease control, well child clinics, pre-natal and post-natal programs, school health, health promotion, disease and injury prevention

and/or

Home and Community Care - responsibilities such case management, chronic disease management, wound care, post-operative care in client homes

and/or

Primary Care - in designated remote communities the Community Health Nurse provides access to primary care, urgent, non-urgent and emergent care, in consultation with Nurse Practitioners and/or Physicians. This involves health education and health promotion in collaboration with the health care team.

The First Nations and Inuit Health Branch at Health Canada supports the delivery of public health and health promotion services on reserve and in Inuit communities. It also provides drug, dental and ancillary health services to First Nations and Inuit people regardless of residence.

First Nations and Inuit Health (FNIH), Health Canada, is recruiting Registered Nurses to provide quality, evidence-informed nursing services, respectful of culture and intended to enhance the health of First Nations people for the communities of Alexis, Bighorn, Whitefish Lake (128)/Goodfish Lake, O'Chiese, Saddle Lake, Sturgeon Lake and Sunchild First Nation. In this position you would enjoy autonomous varied work providing public/community health care while immersed in the diverse cultures of Canada’s First Nations.

Experience:

*Recent and significant is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally associated with full time performance of duties for a minimum period of 1 year within the last 3 years.

Conditions of employment

Possession of a valid driver’s license.
