The Biology Study Leader manages a Bioinformatics Research Support Unit and establishes priorities; co-develops research techniques and analytical methodologies within a network of similar units and integrates bioinformatics tools to facilitate analyses by members of the different science programs (e.g. Functional Galaxy); actively contributes to the Bioinformatics BI community of practice within AAFC’s Bioinformatics Research Support Network; manages the activities of the members of the Unit, including term employees; supports science leads in adapting experimental designs, and in analysing large data sets in a field of “omics” (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics etc.), remote sensing and/or imaging; interprets and presents data to science programs for publication in scientific journals; and advises a broad range of science clients in the centre.
Key Activities
Designing, developing and conducting collaborative science activities in omics, sensing and imaging in support of the science programs; establishing priorities with users’ group representatives for the execution of science studies within the research support unit; providing site management of a Bioinformatics Research Support Unit with the objectives of making omics and large data analysis more accessible to HQP associated with local science programs; leading technology adoption in science programs; and writing scientific reports.
Collecting, compiling, analysing and interpreting research data from research studies.
Coordinating and/or supervising technical assistants, temporary staff and/or students allocated to the studies including monitoring work in progress and evaluating performance, and interpreting results of their scientific efforts.
Actively contributing to AAFC’s network of Bioinformatics Research Support Units; providing expert advice on large data analysis and omics analysis; acting as the scientific authority for contracted bioinformatics services; and reviewing scientific literature to maintain knowledge of current research and new research methodologies.
As one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers, AAFC is proud to celebrate our achievement in creating a diverse, respectful, and positive workplace where all employees are valued and recognized for their unique qualities, ideas, voices and perspectives.
