Duties

Prepare plant, maintain and harvest cereal and oilseed test plots in field and greenhouse research trials. Some equipment required to be operated are; 50 -100 HP tractors, mowers, small plot seeders and combines, and small grain cleaners. Agronomic data such as heights, yield, test weight and disease ratings are collected with the use of computer technology. Grain samples are collected, processed and shipped to various research institutions in Western Canada.

Intent of the process

Immediate staffing need: 1 full time temporary position for a 6 month duration.

A pool of qualified candidates may be established and may be used for similar permanent and temporary employment for the location indicated for this process.

In the event that an employee of the public service is qualified through this process, and there is a temporary need, he/she may be considered for acting or assignment/secondment opportunities.

A secondary school diploma or employer-approved alternative.

Degree equivalency

Experience operating agricultural/farm equipment, including tractors, seeders, combines, and sprayers.
Experience working with cereal crops.
Experience applying and handling agricultural chemical products.
Experience working in a greenhouse.

Conditions of employment

Ability and willingness to work overtime including evenings and weekends.
Ability and willingness to work under variable weather conditions.
Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work including moderate to heavy manual labour requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 20kg).
Ability and willingness to work in harsh environments (outdoors, cold, hot, dust, and noise).
Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication and this must not impinge upon the duties to be performed.
Ability and willing to work in a laboratory, greenhouse and field environments.
Ability and willingness to work with chemicals and pesticides.
