Important messages

You will be required to show how you demonstrate the essential qualifications (i.e. education and experience) by answering online screening questions. You must provide concrete and detailed examples to clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience requirements listed in the essential qualifications section. The screening board cannot make any assumptions about your experience. It is not sufficient to say that you have the required qualifications or to list your current duties. One effective approach would be to write one or two paragraphs demonstrating that you have the required experience and ensure that clear and accurate details are provided. It is not sufficient to only state that the qualifications are met or to provide a listing of current or past responsibilities. Rather you must clearly demonstrate how, when, and where the qualification was met through substantiation by examples. Information on your described skills, experience, etc. provided in the screening questions should be supported by your resume. Failure to provide the above information in the format required may result in your application being rejected from the process.

Intent of the process

A pool of candidates will be established and may be used to staff the same or similar positions of various tenures including indeterminate, term and/or casual in the Pacific Region.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Some essential and other qualifications will be assessed through your application. It is your responsibility to provide appropriate examples that illustrate how you meet each qualification. In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

A secondary school diploma

Degree equivalency

Valid Transport Canada Master Certificate, Limited for a vessel less than 60 Gross Tonnage Valid for non-passenger vessel operating in Fraser River, Vancouver Harbor

Experience in operation of small vessel (<60GT) in various conditions including open water, strong currents, shallow & narrow waterways, confined spaces , adjacent to fixed structures.

Experience in troubleshooting mechanical issues, performing and overseeing maintenance on vessels to maintain safety.

Experience in overseeing the maintenance and certifications for vessel fire and safety systems.

Ability in radio operation (such as local vessel traffic services, marine emergency calls (such as Distress, man overboard)).
Ability in vessel handing skills (such as pre departure routines, safe docking and traffic management).
Ability to perform emergency procedures (such as fire and man overboard).
Ability to communicate effectively orally.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing.

Experience with Mechanics (Diesel and Gas Engines)

Knowledge of Basic Hydrographic Surveying

Maintenance of a valid Radio Operator Certificate (Marine Commercial).
