Duties

• Prepare surfaces, including blast cleaning, for application of diverse finishes; application of Coast Guard high performance coating systems on towers, buoys, and other equipment or structures.
• Assist in planning activities such as developing work schedules, estimating costs and quantities of material required to carry out work and providing input to decision-making with respect to selection of products and painting equipment.
• Recommend changes to support performance, quality and durability.
• Ensure compliance with safety standards for personnel and workshop.
• Ensure that all work activities are adequately captured in the Coast Guard asset data management system.
• Perform maintenance on paint shop and associated equipment, including blast booth and its components.
• Operate overhead crane and other equipment within shop, forklifts, mobile crane, and shop vehicle (truck).

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.

Degree equivalency

Recent* experience in preparing different metal surfaces by grit blasting.

Experience working with mobile or overhead cranes.

Experiencing using the Microsoft Office suite of software, including Word, Excel and Outlook (or similar word, spreadsheet and email programs).

Recent* experience in the painting of different kinds of metals in an industrial environment.


*Recent is defined as being within the past 5 years.

Training on WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System).

Experience with the use of airless and standard painting devices.

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

Valid class G driver's license and willingness to drive an automobile vehicle or a light truck.

Willing and able to climb and work on high structure (towers) up to 35 meters high.

Willing and able to work overtime as required.

Willing and able to travel for period up to six (6) weeks and to use various modes of transportation including helicopter, ships, planes and small boats.

Valid medical suitability.
