The student will collect and analyze beef cattle feedlot manure/compost, soil and forage crop samples to investigate how organic amendments and synthetic fertilizer applications affect greenhouse gas emissions, increase soil carbon sequestration and improve pasture soil health. The student will perform laboratory analyses of collected gas, plant, manure/compost and soil samples and conduct statistical analyses of the data generated and contribute to the writing of at least one scientific paper.
At least two terms will be spent at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, taking graduate level courses and conducting controlled laboratory incubation experiments. The remaining time will be spent at the Lethbridge Research and Development Centre (LeRDC) of Agriculture of Agri-Food Canada. Will conduct field work located near the LeRDC, in S. AB, usually accompanied by an experienced soil chemistry technician and undergraduate student assistants. Will also work in the greenhouse and labs of various scientists at LeRDC.
The first 6 months will be at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and the remaining 18 months will be at the AAFC Research and Development Center in Lethbridge, Alberta.

Currently enrolled or will be enrolled in a Master’s program at the University of Alberta with specialization in Renewable Resources by end of August, 2017. Suitable Bachelors’ backgrounds include: Environmental Science, Soil Science, or related discipline.
Experience working in a lab and field environment.
Experience preparing research documents.
