This is an inventory to fill upcoming 6 permanent Patent Examiner positions in the Electrical Division.

The Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is a special operating agency of Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada. CIPO is roughly 1000 employees strong and is located in Gatineau, Quebec, within sight of the Parliament buildings.

You will read and analyze inventions described in patent applications such as this one: http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointernet-internetopic.nsf/eng/wr01441.html. You will search technical databases to ascertain how the invention improves upon the state of the art. You will communicate with the applicant, outlining your analysis and whatever defects need to be corrected before approving the patent.

The SG-PAT-03 level is a training level in preparation for advancement to the SG-PAT-04 working level for Patent Examiners (salary from 78 767 $ to 96 476$) within a 2 year period. You will learn both the technical and legal aspects of patent examination in a comprehensive training program comprising a formal lectures course and on-the-job practical training. You will have the chance to be guided by a Senior Patent Examiner in order to perfectly master patent examination.

Intent of the process

We presently have a need for 6 permanent (indeterminate) and full time positions to be filled in Fall 2017 and are planning to staff a number of positions that will be determined in Spring 2018. A pool could also be used to fill similar positions.

Bachelor's degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in electrical, computer or software engineering.

A written exam, an interview and reference checks may be part of the candidate's assessment.
