Duties

- Responsible for supporting a CNC research scientist in taxonomy, systematics and phylogeny of cutworm moths.
- Preparing and curating research-grade Lepidoptera specimens for scientific study, including genitalic slide preparations.
- Sample preparation, processing and analysis of molecular data
- Photography and digital editing of insect specimens, including slide preparations, for publication.
- Aid in field work to collect research specimens.
- Aid in specimen curation and collections management of the Lepidoptera section.
- Various other assigned duties.

Work environment

Science and Technology Branch, Ottawa Research and Development Centre (ORDC), is located on the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. The successful applicant will work in a number of on-site facilities including the Canadian National Collection of Insects, entomology and molecular biology laboratories, controlled environment growth facilities, and an Electron Microscopy Centre. As part of ORDC and the Invertebrate Systematics research group, the successful applicant will also work closely with other researchers and support staff in a variety of entomology and agriculture disciplines.

In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a natural, physical or applied science with specialization in biological sciences or a field relevant to the duties of the position

Degree equivalency

Experience in collecting, preparing, and curating insect specimens for a research collection;

Experience in micro-dissecting and microscope slide preparation of insect specimens;

Experience in using computers and software for word processing, and generating and managing databases

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Graduation with a degree from a Master’s program from a recognized post-secondary institution in Entomology

Degree equivalency

Experience in Lepidoptera genitalic dissection and slide preparation;

Experience in generating, analyzing and managing molecular data;

Experience in identification and taxonomy of the Lepidoptera;

Experience in digital image capture of small natural history specimens;

Experience with imaging software, including Adobe Photoshop;

Experience in phylogenetic analysis and in contributing to writing of scientific papers.
