Work environment

A Telecommunication Operator is responsible for responding to both Police and Emergency 911 calls for service while dispatching RCMP and other emergency responders to incidents in their respective province. This requires a level of multi-tasking simultaneously on a computer with multiple screens/programs while responding to calls on a radio/phone of which some may be highly stressful "life or death" situations. Telecommunications Operators are often exposed to emotionally charged clients and incidents which may be traumatic, violent and disturbing. Telecommunication Operators work shift work (24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 days a year).

Intent of the process

When you apply to this selection process, you are not applying for a specific job, but to a pool for future vacancies. As positions become available, applicants who meet the qualifications may be contacted for further assessment.

The pool may be used to staff future vacancies (including similar positions, on a term, indeterminate, or acting basis, at full or part time hours) within the area of selection.

The intent of the process is to establish a pool of qualified candidates at the TCO-01 group and level.

Once established, the qualified pool will be valid for a period of one year and may be extended.

Candidates who are qualified at the TCO-01 level and who are selected for the National Telecommunications Operator Training Program will be appointed to a determinate (term) appointment at the TCO-01 group and level.

Part 1 - Call Taking: Pre-Course (3 weeks at work location), Classroom (3 weeks at *PRTC) and Field Coaching (9-10 weeks at work location).
Part 2 - Dispatch: Pre-Course (1 week at work location), Classroom (2 weeks at *PRTC) and Field Coaching (9-10 weeks at work location).

You will be expected to travel and reside at the *Pacific Region Training Centre (Chilliwack, BC) for the duration of these courses in order to complete the training program.

Training for experienced operators will be determined based on their training and work experience. Experienced operators may not be required to attend the classroom training at the Pacific Region Training Centre.

Should a CM be found qualified and selected for appointment, the appointment will not result in a change of status to another category for the member. Notification regarding the CM appointment will be sent to all applicable candidates who are within the area of selection and participated in the advertised process.

Should a PSE be found qualified and selected for appointment, notification regarding the PS appointment will be posted accordingly on www.jobs.gc.ca.
