This employment fits within a research program in sow lactation biology. The M.Sc. student will be in charge of the experimental and laboratory phases of a research project looking at the hormonal control of mammary development in pregnant gilts. More specifically, the effect of increasing prolactin concentrations via the dopamine antagonist domperidone will be studied. The student will participate in the experimental treatment and blood sampling of gilts and in the collection of tissues (fetuses, mammary glands, ovaries) at slaughter of the gilts. The student will then participate in the dissection and composition analyses of mammary tissue as well as the measure of concentrations of various metabolites and hormones in blood. These data will be entered into computerized files, subjected to statistical analyses and a memoir will be written. The student will be supervised by a research scientist and a research assistant in lactation biology.
