Duties

Plans, organizes and executes the operation, maintenance and repair of the main propulsion plant, electrical plant, auxiliary machinery, deck machinery, hotel equipment and miscellaneous systems.

Provides technical support and supervises the work of contractors and temporary personnel assigned to the engine room to assist in the conduct of program operations.

Leads and/or participates in, damage control, firefighting, environmental response and other drills, exercises and operations;

Assists with deck duties and deck machinery operations;

Compiles, recommends and manages refit specifications, vessel's additions and alterations, and other contract repair work required for the upkeep of the vessel;

Purchases goods and services, and makes recommendations to the Commanding Officer pertaining to the engine room's material resource needs;

Provides a thorough Change-Over Briefing with the relieving Engineer, including a review of pertinent vessel documents and relevant correspondence;

Provides all support necessary to ensure CCG meets its mandate.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians. The CCG also plays a key role in ensuring the sustainable use and development of Canada's oceans and waterways.

Intent of the process

The intent of the process is to create an inventory of candidates that will be used to staff RELIEF Engineering Officer positions for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Central and Arctic Region - Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Sector.

The first draw from the inventory will occur on May 31, 2017. Any subsequent draw from the inventory will occur annually or as operationally required.

Valid 4th Class Engineer - Motor Certificate (STCW) or higher

Marine Emergency Duties STCW - Basic Safety
Note: if you are in possession of the former MED A1 and B2, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the course listed above

Marine Emergency Duties Advanced Firefighting
Note: if you are in possession of the former MED C, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the course listed above

Marine Emergency Duties STCW- Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats.
Note: if you are in possession of the former MED B1, these will be accepted as they are considered to be the equivalent of the course listed above

If you possess any of the following, your application must also clearly explain how you meet it (other qualifications)

Valid First Aid Certificate

Valid 2nd Class Engineer Certificate or higher

3 months experience as an engineering officer in charge of a watch in an engine room

Experience as an engineer officer in charge of a team of an engine room during refit period

Willingness and ability to work overtime.

Willingness and ability to wear and maintain a uniform per Canadian Coast Guard standards, inclusive of CSA approved Safety Footwear (black in colour), and maintain job related personal safety equipment.

Must take training in Respiratory Protection and wear a respiratory protective device. As part of wearing a respiratory protective device while on board CCG vessels, employees must maintain a clean shaven appearance where the face-piece of a respiratory protective device seals to the skin and that no facial hair interferes with the face to face-piece seal on respiratory protective device.
