Stream 1: Buildings and Grounds Position Duties: (this list does not include all duties of this position)
- Maintains the serviceability and appearance of the buildings and grounds.
- Maintains life safety components such as fire extinguishers and lighting.
- Performs minor repairs to fences, masonry, curbs, and concrete and asphalt surfaces.
- Operates a variety of equipment (e.g. forklift, tractor, front-end loader), uses hand and automatic power tools (e.g. band saw, drills, etc.).
- Participates in ensuring building services, contracts for cleaning, garbage removal, pest management, landscaping, etc.
- Investigates client complaints and takes prompt remedial action.
Stream 2: Mechanical Services Position Duties: (this list does not include all duties of this position)
- Ensure proper functioning and safe operation of equipment and safety systems located within a Crown-owned building(s) for the Department within departmental guidelines regarding trade licensing in order to ensure an uninterrupted, safe and comfortable environment
- Operate, test and maintain mechanical systems and equipment associated with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, water and plumbing and life safety systems.
- Ensure the integrity of systems and the safety and comfort of building occupants; and takes corrective action, including mechanical repairs, adjustments and replacement of components.
- Act as the First Responder to concerns from building occupants and works to resolve the issues as efficiently as possible, in consultation with supervisor.
- Provide opinions and makes recommendations to the Supervisor and/or Manager with respect to plans and specifications for proposed modifications or repairs to building systems as well as for purchases, maintenance, upgrades and repairs.
The pool of successful candidates may be used to fill casual, term, and indeterminate positions within Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
Stream 1: Buildings & Grounds - two term positions* - British Columbia – Prince Rupert and Cultus Lake
Stream 2: Mechanical Services - two term positions* - Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, B.C. and Pacific Biological Station, Nanaimo, B.C.
*There is the potential of hiring these positions indeterminately dependent on departmental resource decisions.

Education:
Stream 1 and Stream 2:
- A secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience
Stream 2:
- Certification as a 4th Class Stationary Engineer
Experience :
Stream 1 and Stream 2:
- Experience working with trades in support of facility operations and maintenance
- Experience providing general labour in support of facility operations and maintenance functions
- Experience in performing minor construction and renovation projects
- Experience performing inspections and keeping records
Stream 1:
- Experience maintaining buildings and grounds in at least two of the following functions: carpentry, painting, horticulture, irrigations systems, fire extinguisher maintenance.
Stream 2:
- Experience maintaining buildings and mechanical services such as HVAC, plumbing, pumps, life safety systems.
Experience:
Stream 1 and 2:
- Experience providing trades support to facility operations and maintenance functions at complex federal facilities
Stream 1:
- Experience working in laboratory or yard based operations
Stream 2:
- Experience working in the electrical or mechanical trades in support of facility operations and maintenance
- Experience working with (DDC) Direct Digital Control Systems

- Physically capable of traversing rough terrain under varying weather conditions

- Willingness to travel within the Province by car, truck, boat, helicopter, and/or to attend conferences that require overnight stays

1. Exposure to dust, toxic substances, excessive noise, and disagreeable weather conditions;
2. Obligations to be mobile, climb ladders, work on scaffolding and platforms, and transport heavy equipment and material;
3. Willingness to wear or use personal protective equipment in accordance with safety rules
