Duties

The Canadian Coast Guards Communications Riggers provide construction, erection, and maintenance services to towers, antennae, cabling and microwave systems and site works in support of the Marine Communications & Traffic Services programs provided for the safety of mariners and the protection of the environment.

Work environment

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) owns and operates the federal government's civilian fleet, and provides key maritime services to Canadians. As a Special Operating Agency of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), the CCG helps DFO meet its responsibility to ensure safe and accessible waterways for Canadians.

A key part of this service is a series of mountaintop towers connected to one another by microwave systems. These towers, high above sea-level, are perched precariously on some of the highest, most rugged peaks of B.C.'s coastal mountains. Coast Guard remote radio peripheral sites house radio communication equipment that transmit and receive radio transmissions broadcast from the various MCTS radio centres. Many of these sites, due to their location, are powered by local diesel generator systems which require annual refueling when conditions allow. The continual maintenance and update of these systems ensures that effective communication between boaters and the Canadian Coast Guard is available even in the worst weather off the Pacific Coast.

Intent of the process

The results of the process may also be used to create a pool of qualified candidates that may be used to staff similar positions of various tenures on an indeterminate, term, acting, assignment or secondment basis in various locations.
